Toyota Introduces Hybrid Power to Hilux Pick-Up: Explore the Details

Toyota has revealed the Hilux MHEV for the European market. The new version includes a 48-volt mild hybrid system and is around 10% more fuel-efficient than its diesel-only counterpart. According to the company, the incorporation of this mild-hybrid technology has not impacted the vehicle's off-road and towing capabilities. Furthermore, the elements of the mild-hybrid structure are organised in such a way that a 700mm water-wading depth is possible. This setup, according to Toyota, provides better torque assistance, smoother start/stop operations, and regenerative braking than diesel-only powertrain. The Hilux MHEV will be produced in Thailand for European customers and is expected to be offered in other markets soon. Right now, there is no information available on the Hilux's mild hybrid version's arrival in India. More information on the same is anticipated to surface soon.

Toyota Hilux MHEV: What's Changed Mechanically?

The most significant modification, as previously stated, is a 2.8-litre diesel engine coupled to a 48V mild hybrid system. This mild-hybrid system is made up of a battery, an electric motor generator, and other components. Although power values have not yet been released, a boost in power and torque outputs is anticipated. The Hilux's only diesel variant has a maximum power output of 201bhp. The diesel engine's transmission is handled by a 6-speed torque converter automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Toyota Hilux MHEV: Will it Come to India?

In addition to Europe, the company will also offer the Hilux mild hybrid in South Africa, Australia, and ASEAN countries. Although there are currently no official reports, this model may also be introduced in India. Market sources state that the carmaker is thinking about introducing this technology to India, however, it's unclear which model will be the first to have it. Given its popularity in India, the Fortuner may be the next vehicle to obtain the mild hybrid treatment and launch as early as next year.

Toyota Hilux Waiting Period in India

All Hilux variants are currently subject to a four-week waiting period in the country, which runs through the end of November. For more specific information, interested clients can contact their closest authorised dealerships. In terms of amenities, the pickup truck has an instrument cluster, a 6-speaker setup, cruise control, steering-mounted controls, an auto-dimming IRVM, a cooled glove box, front and rear parking sensors, and more. It also has an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay integration.

The IMV 0 platform-based models were previewed in Indonesia first as the Toyota Rangga concept, and more recently, at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 as the IMV 0 concept. Based on recent spy shots of the pickup, the test mule’s design is quite similar to what we have seen on the previously mentioned concepts. Quirky, retro and yet boxy is the main theme, and there are clear references to the iconic FJ40 Land Cruiser.

Features

  1. Modular Design: The beauty of the IMV 0 platform lies in its modular design, enabling diverse applications. Different bodies, such as food trucks, coffee bars, campers, and ambulances, can be easily attached to the flat-bed section.
  2. Adaptability for Various Uses: From a mobile food business to a safari camper or even a mountain rescue ambulance, the IMV 0 platform offers adaptability for a range of practical and recreational purposes.
  3. Ladder-Frame Unit: The platform's robust ladder-frame unit ensures durability, making it well-suited for developing markets seeking reliable and versatile solutions.
  4. Potential for Affordable Fortuner Version: While there's no official confirmation, the IMV 0 platform hints at the potential for an affordable version of the Fortuner, catering to the needs of cost-conscious markets.
  5. Hilux Champ's Uncertain Debut in India: Though the arrival of the Toyota Hilux Champ in India is not confirmed, industry sources suggest the likelihood of its introduction in the future. If realized, the SUV derivative is expected to hit the Indian market approximately a year after the pickup's launch, offering consumers a versatile and adaptable vehicle option."

Toyota Hilux Champ: what’s in store for India?

While there is no official word on whether the Toyota Hilux Champ will make it to India, the IMV 0 platform, which is a ladder-frame unit, is meant for developing markets, and is likely to spawn an affordable version of the Fortuner. However, sources tell us the Hilux Champ is likely to make its way to India in the future, and the SUV derivative is expected to go on sale around a year after the pickup’s India launch.

Toyota global portfolio expansion

The Japanese company has been expanding some of its more popular and premium nameplates – from the introduction of an SUV in the Century line-up to the addition of the Crown Sport SUV and a high-riding sedan to the Crown range. The expansion of the more affordable Hilux range, especially in markets like India where the large pickup is already an expensive proposition, will surely help Toyota’s sales numbers.

While there is no word yet on what engines it will come with, expect the Hilux Champ to get a diesel engine (likely the 2.4-litre unit from the Innova Crysta) and a strong-hybrid powertrain. Automatic gearbox options will also be on offer, sending power to the rear wheels, though a 4WD version may also be on the cards. An EV version of the Hilux Champ is not expected to be offered. Toyota claims that the beauty of the IMV 0 platform comes from its modular design that allows multiple bodies for different uses and applications to be bolted on to the flat-bed section. It can be made into a food truck, a coffee bar, a camper for safaris and even a mountain rescue ambulance.
