Toyota Hilux Receives a Bold Upgrade with its Third Facelift

Toyota has unveiled the latest iteration of the Hilux pickup truck in Australia and Indonesia marking the third facelift for the current-gen model. This update is anticipated to be the final enhancement before an all-new Hilux is set to make its debut next year. The latest facelift introduces subtle cosmetic changes, with the most significant upgrade being the incorporation of 48V mild-hybrid technology for the diesel engine promising improved efficiency and enhanced performance.

Minimal Cosmetic Updates

The exterior modifications are restrained, primarily focusing on the front of the truck. The hexagonal grille now features new internals, varying based on the trim level. The front bumper has been redesigned for a more muscular appearance. Higher-spec trims receive additional gloss black accents for fog lamp bezels, wing mirrors, and door handles, along with tinted LED headlamps.

Enhanced Interior Features

The interior sees notable additions, including dual-zone air conditioning, a wireless charging pad, two rear USB-C ports, and an auto up/down function for all four windows. While these features elevate the comfort and convenience, the overall interior design remains unchanged.

Advanced 48V Mild-Hybrid Tech

The highlight of the facelift is the integration of 48V mild-hybrid technology into the 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. This technology, previously introduced for the European market, includes a belt-driven electric motor-generator, a small lithium battery, and a DC to DC converter facilitating a stop/start system. Toyota claims the mild-hybrid system enhances efficiency by 6-10 percent, refines performance, and reduces noise levels. The diesel engine maintains its power output of 204hp and 500Nm of torque.

Efficiency Boost and Refinement

The incorporation of the mild-hybrid system aims to improve fuel efficiency contributing to a greener and more sustainable driving experience. Additionally the refinement and noise reduction aspects enhance the overall driving comfort.

Global Engine Options

While the Hilux facelift, with its diesel hybrid variant, is currently targeted at the Australian and Indonesian markets, the Hilux lineup globally offers engine options such as a 2.4-litre diesel and a 2.7-litre petrol engine, available with manual and automatic transmissions, and in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations.

Potential for Hybrid Tech Expansion

Although the specific cosmetic and feature upgrades are market-specific, the introduction of the 48V mild-hybrid technology for the diesel engine is expected to pave the way for its incorporation into other Toyota models, potentially including the Fortuner, bringing hybrid advancements to a broader audience.

As Toyota continues to innovate and refine its lineup the Hilux facelift exemplifies the brand's commitment to delivering efficient and advanced vehicles that meet the evolving needs of drivers worldwide.
