In the ever-evolving landscape of electric vehicles (EVs), the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 have undergone thorough updates, prompting a third comparison in a year. The initial face-off in May 2023 favored the Nexon EV, highlighting Mahindra's room for improvement. Subsequent updates and enhancements in both models set the stage for a second comparison, won again by the Nexon EV.

Design

The two EVs exhibit distinct design philosophies catering to different preferences. The XUV400, larger in dimensions and featuring sharp lines, exudes a conventional yet robust character. In contrast, the Nexon EV adopts a futuristic, jazzier persona with coupe-like elements, animated LED lights, and sharper styling, complementing its relatively premium pricing.

Interiors

The 2024 XUV400 introduces revamped interiors, transitioning from an all-black theme to a two-tone ivory-and-black scheme, enhancing upmarket appeal. The Nexon EV features a completely new interior, boasts touch-operable keys, a large screen and illuminated steering, creating a modern and impressive cabin. While the XUV400 offers a more agreeable driving position and better visibility, the Nexon EV's interior makes a stronger initial impression.

Performance

Despite the XUV400's superior power figures, the Nexon EV surprises with competitive acceleration timings, showcasing strong performance. The XUV400's motor delivers torque more smoothly with improved drivability attributed to added features like ESP and Traction Control. Both models offer multiple drive modes with the Nexon EV providing additional options for adjusting regenerative braking through paddle shifters.

Range and Charging

In the long-range versions, the Nexon EV claims a range of 465km, outperforming the XUV400's claimed 456km. Real-world tests favor the Nexon EV delivering better efficiency. Both EVs support AC and DC fast charging, with the XUV400 having an edge in charging speed, capable of reaching 45kW compared to the Nexon EV's 30kW. The models employ different battery technologies (LFP for Nexon EV, NMC for XUV400), each offering an 8-year warranty.

Ride & Handling

The XUV400, with softer suspension, excels in city rides but tends to feel bouncy at higher speeds. The Nexon EV featuring a stiffer chassis and firmer suspension offers a more composed ride at higher speeds showcasing confident handling.

Mahindra's updates enhance the XUV400 addressing previous shortcomings and offering better value for money. However, the Nexon EV, with its modern and premium experience, superior design, motor performance, and efficiency, continues to outshine the competition. Tata's strategic positioning with multiple variants across a broader price range further strengthens the Nexon EV's appeal making it the more desirable choice. In summary the Tata Nexon EV maintains its lead emerging as the preferred option for tech-savvy EV buyers.
