Tata Nexon CNG: Testing Starts, Launch Expected Soon

Tata Motors is set up to introduce a CNG variant of its popular Nexon SUV, making it the first vehicle in the Indian market to offer a turbo-petrol engine with CNG compatibility. This development follows the showcase of a CNG version at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Expo, with a recent spotting of a camouflaged test mule indicating that its launch is on the horizon.

Powertrain Specifications

The Nexon CNG will be powered by the same 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine as the regular version, delivering 120 PS and 170 Nm. However, the power output is expected to be slightly reduced in CNG mode. Tata is likely to offer both 5-speed manual and AMT transmission options, although official performance and mileage figures are yet to be revealed.

Feature-Rich Offering

While it's uncertain which variants will receive the CNG option, a top-spec Nexon CNG could potentially become the most feature-rich CNG SUV in the market. Anticipated features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, cruise control, wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof.

Safety and Security

Safety features in the Nexon CNG are expected to be comprehensive, with potential inclusions such as six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a 360-degree camera with a blind view monitor.

Pricing and Competition

The Tata Nexon is currently priced between Rs 8.15 lakh and Rs 15.80 lakh (ex-showroom), with the CNG variants expected to command a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the equivalent petrol-manual variants. Upon its launch, the Nexon CNG will primarily compete with the Maruti Brezza CNG, while also facing off against other compact SUVs like the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.

In conclusion, the Tata Nexon CNG is poised to be a significant addition to the compact SUV segment offering a blend of performance, features and eco-friendliness that is sure to appeal to a wide range of buyers.
