Skoda India's Comeback: Diesel Engine to Power New Gen Superb

Skoda India is making a bold move in the Indian automotive market by reintroducing diesel engine options with its upcoming generation of the Superb. This choice signifies a substantial change in the way the brand is reacting to changing consumer demands and the ongoing market for diesel vehicles mainly in the SUV class. After quietly discontinuing the Superb in India last year due to BS6 stage-2 emissions norms, Skoda plans to reintroduce diesel-powered Superb models via the Completely Built-Up (CBU) route, with the first batch expected to arrive later this year.

Reintroducing Diesel Engines

Skoda's decision to bring back diesel engines signifies a departure from its previous global strategy of discontinuing diesel engines. The company determination to satisfy customer demand for diesel vehicles while maintaining strict emission regulations is demonstrated by this action. Skoda's successful 'India 2.0' strategy, which has so far offered only petrol engine options across its lineup, is now responding to the market's demand for diesel cars in certain segments.

The 2024 Superb

The 2024 Superb, unveiled globally in November last year, offers six engine options internationally, including three petrol, two diesel, and a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). However, for the Indian market, Skoda is expected to feature two engine options: a locally manufactured 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit and a fully-imported diesel trim. This intentional decision is being taken by Skoda India effort to gain a significant market share and provide customers with other engine options.

Skoda's Strategic Move

Skoda's decision to reintroduce diesel engines with the new Superb demonstrates the brand's adaptability and commitment to meeting consumer demands. With the Indian automotive market showing a strong preference for diesel cars in certain segments, Skoda's move is expected to resonate well with consumers. As Skoda prepares to reintroduce diesel-powered Superb models it is poised to make a significant impact in the Indian automotive market, offering consumers a compelling choice in the premium sedan segment.

With the new Superb, Skoda has strategically chosen to reintroduce diesel engines, demonstrating its response to consumer requests and market trends. With more engine options available Skoda intends to appeal to a wider clientele while maintaining its reputation for quality and performance. With this step, Skoda has raised the bar for excellence in the Indian car business and shown that it is committed to both innovation and customer happiness even as the market shifts.
