Possible Name for IMV 0-Based Pickup: Toyota Hilux Champ

Toyota is set to expand its Hilux pickup portfolio with a smaller model based on the IMV 0 concept. The new pickup, likely to be named the Hilux Champ, is expected to hit ASEAN markets, including Thailand, by 2025.

Key Details About the Hilux Champ

  • The Hilux Champ will be built on the IMV 0 platform.
  • It will most likely have petrol-hybrid and diesel powerplant options.
  • The car is scheduled to go on sale in ASEAN markets by 2025.
  • The Hilux Champ will be the first model based on the IMV 0 platform.

The IMV 0 platform was initially showcased in Indonesia as the Toyota Rangga concept and later at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 as the IMV 0 concept. According to recent spy images of the truck, the design of the test mule is very similar to what we've seen on the previously discussed ideas. The main motif is quirky, vintage, and boxy, with obvious allusions to the classic FJ40 Land Cruiser.

While engine details are yet to be confirmed, it's expected that the Hilux Champ will feature a diesel engine, likely the 2.4-litre unit from the Innova Crysta, as well as a strong-hybrid powertrain. Automatic gearbox options will be available, with rear-wheel drive as the standard configuration, although a 4WD version may also be offered. An electric vehicle (EV) variant of the Hilux Champ is not in the plans.

Versatility of the IMV 0 Platform

Toyota highlights the modular design of the IMV 0 platform which allows for various bodies to be attached to the flat-bed section. This adaptability means it can be transformed into a food truck, coffee bar, safari camper, or mountain rescue ambulance.

Prospects for India

While there's no official confirmation of the Hilux Champ's arrival in India, the IMV 0 platform is designed for developing markets and could potentially lead to an affordable version of the Fortuner. Sources suggest that the Hilux Champ is likely to make its way to India in the future, with the SUV derivative expected to be available approximately a year after the pickup's launch in India.

Toyota's Global Portfolio Expansion

Toyota has been expanding its portfolio with new offerings, including the introduction of an SUV in the Century lineup, the addition of the Crown Sport SUV, and a high-riding sedan to the Crown range. Toyota's sales growth is expected to be aided by the introduction of the more reasonably priced Hilux range, particularly in areas where large pickup trucks are often expensive, like India.
