New BAIC BJ30 Compact SUV Breaks Cover in China With Bigger and Boxier Looks

BAIC, a car company in China, is giving their small SUV, the BJ30, a makeover. The new version of this compact SUV is going to look quite different from the previous one, which borrowed some style from Jeeps and Range Rovers. After nearly ten years of use, the outdated design needed to be replaced to remain competitive.

A Fresh Exterior Design

The 2024 BAIC BJ30 has a fresh look that's more in line with BAIC's newer SUVs, like the BJ40. It still has a boxy shape, but it's a bit softer. The front of the car has square LED headlights and a covered grille that looks like a pair of glasses. The bumpers and side skirts are black and unpainted, giving it an off-road look. The windows are similar to the old version, but they're longer, and there's a black strip on the side that makes it look like the roof is floating. The taillights in the back wouldn't seem out of place on a different brand's car.

Interior Upgrades

We don't have pictures of the inside yet, but pictures taken by spies in China suggest that the cabin will have a big display for things like music and maps, a digital dashboard, and a roomy center console with lots of places to put things.

Bigger Size and More Power

The new BJ30 is bigger than the old one. With a wheelbase of 111 inches—the separation between the front and rear wheels—it is 186.2 inches long by 75.2 inches wide by 69.2 inches tall. That's 8.9 inches longer than the old one, and only 2.4 inches shorter than the BJ40. Under the hood, it has a 1.5-liter gas engine that's not electric and makes 185 horsepower, which is more than the old version.

Expected Release and Pricing

  • We don't know when the new BJ30 will come out, but it's likely to be in 2024. The current version costs between,464 and,199 in Chinese money, but the new one might be a bit more expensive because it's bigger, more powerful, and maybe has more features.
