Mercedes EQS Facelift: Embracing Tradition in the Electric Era

Mercedes-Benz is set to enhance its flagship electric vehicle, the EQS, with a facelift that combines traditional design elements with modern technology. The upcoming EQS facelift has been teased, revealing a new grille option that pays homage to the brand's classic aesthetic while maintaining its futuristic appeal.

Grille Options: Bridging the Past and Future

The refreshed EQS will offer buyers two grille choices: a newly designed conventional grille with the iconic three-pointed star mounted on the bonnet, and the current, sleeker-looking grille with the star integrated into the panel. This move aims to cater to different customer preferences, with CEO Ola Kallenius stating, "Some [customers] will want to keep a more sporty look...and some we believe will want to have the more traditional look." The traditional grille option bears a resemblance to the one used by the Mercedes S-Class, highlighting the brand's effort to merge its rich heritage with its electric future.

Battery and Range Enhancements

In addition to aesthetic updates, the EQS facelift will feature an upgraded battery with new chemistry, enhancing the vehicle's range. The new battery, expected to be similar to the upgraded pack recently installed in the EQS SUV, will increase from 108kWh to 118kWh. This enhancement could potentially push the EQS sedan's range close to 800km, making it an even more compelling option for long-distance travel.

Luxurious Interior Upgrades

The EQS facelift will also introduce the option of "executive seats," likely replacing the rear bench with two individual seats that can recline, adding an extra layer of comfort and luxury to the already opulent interior.

Market Performance and Availability

Despite facing a sales slump last year, Mercedes-Benz aims to reinvigorate the EQS's market presence with these updates. The refreshed model is expected to go on sale later this year, with the new battery-equipped versions likely entering production before June.

In India, the Mercedes-Benz EQS is available as the EQS 450 and the AMG EQS 53, with prices starting at Rs 1.62 crore (ex-showroom). The facelifted EQS is poised to strengthen Mercedes-Benz's position in the luxury EV market, offering a perfect blend of tradition, innovation, and luxury.
