Mercedes-Benz GLE Facelift Review

Mercedes-Benz GLE Facelift Review

Introduction

Mercedes-Benz has given its popular GLE SUV a makeover, calling it a facelift. This means they've made some small changes to the way it looks and added a few new features. However, these updates come with a bigger price tag.

What We Like

  • Comfy and Spacious Inside: The inside of the GLE is roomy and comfortable, with a luxurious feel. The seats are supportive, and there's a mix of quality materials.

  • Smooth Petrol Engine: The petrol engine, especially in the GLE 450 version, is powerful and operates quietly even at idle.

What We Don't Like

  •  Expensive: The price of the GLE has gone up, and it's now on the higher side compared to other similar SUVs.

Overview

Mercedes has sold a lot of GLEs in India, showing its popularity despite the high price. With the facelift, the cost has increased even more. The range starts at Rs 96.4 lakh for the GLE 300d diesel, which is Rs 23 lakh more than the pre-facelift model launched in 2020. The higher-end models like the GLE 450d diesel and GLE 450 petrol are even pricier.

Stylish Changes

The GLE still looks like a Mercedes SUV, but there are some noticeable changes. The headlights and taillights have been redesigned, giving it a fresh look. The GLE 300d has a cleaner design, while the more powerful 450d and 450 come with sportier features like bigger wheels and a bolder grille.

Interior Updates

Inside, things remain familiar but cozy. The new three-spoke steering wheel looks cool, but the touch interface for controlling screens might not be everyone's favorite. The 12.3-inch touchscreen has been upgraded for better features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, and 3D maps.

Comfortable Rear Seat

If you're a fan of sitting in the back, the GLE won't disappoint. The rear cabin is spacious, with a large panoramic sunroof adding to the airy feel. Rear passengers get amenities like powered sunshades and USB chargers.

Performance

There are three engine options, and all of them come with a mild hybrid system for a bit of extra power. The GLE 450 petrol version is a favorite for those who love a strong engine and a quick 0-100kph time of 5.6 seconds.

Ride and Handling

While the powertrain is sporty, the suspension is more on the soft side. It's not the most exciting to drive, but it offers a plush ride, especially at high speeds. Maneuvering in the city might be a bit challenging due to its size, but the light steering helps.

Safety

The GLE comes with standard safety features like airbags, ABS, and more. However, some advanced safety features found in other Mercedes models are missing.

Verdict

If you prioritize comfort and plan to spend a lot of time in the rear seat, the GLE could be a good choice. The facelift brings some useful features, but it comes at a higher cost. Despite the price increase, Mercedes claims the GLE's high residual values justify the premium. If you're willing to spend more, the GLE is still a worthy luxury SUV.
