Mercedes AMG’s Electric Super SUV Under Development

Mercedes-Benz's performance division, AMG, is developing a groundbreaking electric SUV, set to debut in 2026. A major shift in the brand's strategy for producing high-performance cars is being represented by the construction of this new flagship model on an exclusive Mercedes-AMG electric car platform.

Design and Dimensions of the New Mercedes-AMG Electric SUV

Autocar UK has learned that the upcoming AMG SUV will showcase its design through a concept model soon. This SUV is expected to measure approximately 5,100mm in length providing a spacious interior due to a wheelbase exceeding 3,000mm. For context, it is slightly shorter than BMW’s XM, ensuring ample space and comfort for passengers.

Advanced Platform and Powertrain Innovations

The SUV will be one of the first vehicles to utilize the AMG.EA platform, which is distinct from the platforms used for more mainstream Mercedes-Benz models. This platform uses patented axial flux motors developed by Yasa, a firm Mercedes-AMG bought, and features state-of-the-art 800V electric architecture. Because of their tiny size, great power and torque density, and potential to be used in high-performance applications, these motors are highly respected.

According to Markus Schäfer, head of technology at Mercedes this platform will lead to several technological breakthroughs, most notably in motor efficiency and battery performance. With its lightweight and potent axial flux motors, the specially designed AMG.EA platform is meant for high-performance vehicles and is expected to improve the vehicle's dynamic capabilities.

Power and Performance

The exact specifications of the SUV's powertrain remain under wraps but it is expected to feature multiple motor configurations, including options for dual, tri, and quad-motor setups. These configurations enable torque vectoring and sophisticated four-wheel drive which might increase the output to well over 1,000 horsepower. A brand-new, high-performance battery pack with cutting-edge cell chemistry and silicon anode material to increase efficiency and range will supply this power.

Chassis and Handling

The new AMG model will incorporate technologies such as the Active Ride Control system, previously seen in the second-generation Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe. This system uses individual pumps at each wheel providing a self-levelling feature along with four-wheel steering which promises exceptional handling and stability.

Interior Design and Production Plans

Internally, the vehicle will feature a fresh interior design with a bespoke AMG dashboard and advanced digital displays running the exclusive AMG.OS and this setup will likely include state-of-the-art connectivity and infotainment systems.

The production of this electric SUV is scheduled at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, Germany. This facility is being prepared to accommodate the production of this new model alongside the upcoming GT 4-Door Coupe both of which will anchor AMG's expanding portfolio of electric vehicles.

Expanding AMG's Electric Lineup

Looking beyond just this SUV, AMG plans to introduce more performance-oriented electric vehicles, including a high-performance version of the upcoming third-generation CLA and other compact models. These vehicles will also offer high-end AMG versions providing a wide range of options for performance enthusiasts.
In the face of both existing and up-and-coming competitors, such as the BMW XM and Porsche's K1, Mercedes-AMG is determined to win the high-performance electric car market, as seen by this ambitious initiative.
