Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid Revealed

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 has been revitalized as a dynamic plug-in hybrid, sporting an assertive new look, extensive chassis enhancements, and power on par with the erstwhile V8-powered E 63. Originally launched in 2016 as a performance-oriented option below the top-tier E 63 super-sedan, it retains its 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine, now augmented with an electric motor for a substantial boost in power, reaching up to 612hp.

Powertrain Details

The updated E 53 boasts a 449hp six-cylinder engine paired with a 163hp electric motor, culminating in a combined output of 585hp. The AMG Dynamic Plus package further amplifies the power to 612hp. Additionally, this hybrid variant offers an electric-only range of 100km from its 21.2kWh battery.

Performance Specifications

The engine alone generates 449hp, complemented by up to 163hp from the electric motor. Together, they produce 585hp and 750Nm of torque enabling a 0-100kph acceleration time of 4 seconds for the sedan and 4.1 seconds for the estate. The AMG Dynamic Plus package unlocks the full 612hp, reducing the 0-100kph time to 3.8 seconds for the sedan. This package also lifts the 250kph speed limiter, allowing the E 53 to reach its natural top speed of 280kph.

Charging and Electric Driving

The plug-in hybrid system features a 21.2kWh battery, supporting an electric range of up to 100km, and is rechargeable in about 6 hours with an 11kW home charger. An optional 60kW fast charger is available for quicker charging. The car's regenerative braking can recharge the battery at rates up to 120kW, with adjustable recuperation levels via steering wheel paddles. Electric driving is feasible at speeds below 140kph, and a battery hold mode ensures sufficient charge for extended electric-only driving.

Chassis and Suspension Upgrades

The E-Class chassis has been upgraded with AMG enhancements for increased stiffness and improved handling, featuring a wider front track and advanced suspension dampers. The braking system has also been adapted to work with the hybrid system's energy recuperation.

An optional Superscreen extends across the dashboard, providing the front passenger with their own entertainment and control interface.

Availability in India

In India, the previous Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ Cabriolet is available for Rs 1.3 crore (ex-showroom), while the sedan version was introduced in 2021 but is no longer on sale. The new E 53 sedan may arrive in India, but the estate version is unlikely to be offered.
