Mahindra Trademarks Seven Names for Upcoming 5-Door Thar SUV

Introduction

Mahindra is gearing up for the launch of an upgraded version of its immensely popular Thar SUV, and this time around, it's introducing a 5-door variant. The anticipated release date is set for mid-2024, and in preparation for this, the company has gone ahead and trademarked seven names for the new SUV, with one of them being the nostalgically resonant "Thar Armada."

Thar Armada: A Resurgence of Nostalgia

The Thar Armada nameplate carries with it a rich history, originating in the early 1990s when Mahindra first introduced it as a flagship offering targeted towards urban consumers. Sporting a design inspired by Jeep SUVs, it represented a more upscale alternative to the Commander SUV of that era. Despite being eventually succeeded by the Bolero in 2001, the Armada name is making a noteworthy return for the upcoming 5-door Thar.

A Suite of Trademarked Names

Beyond Thar Armada, Mahindra's list of trademarked names includes Cult, Rex, Roxx, Savannah, Gladius, and Centurion. These names are intended to serve as distinctive identifiers when appended to the "Thar" label, denoting the larger, 5-door variant in comparison to the standard Thar model.

The 5-Door Thar: Enhancing Appeal

The 5-door Thar aims to broaden the appeal of the model by combining its renowned tough, off-road capabilities with added comfort and practicality. The extended wheelbase promises more space in the second row and the boot, enhancing its suitability for a wider range of consumers. In terms of design, subtle alterations will distinguish it from its 3-door counterpart.

Interior Upgrades and Engine Specifications

Internally, the 5-door Thar is anticipated to offer substantial upgrades, featuring a more expansive 10.25-inch touchscreen and the inclusion of a sunroof. Under the hood, it is expected to retain the existing 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines, with both manual and automatic transmission options catering to diverse consumer preferences.

Expected Debut and Pricing Insights

The much-anticipated debut of the 5-door Thar is projected to take place around the middle of 2024. While this enhanced variant is likely to carry a higher price tag compared to the regular Thar, early estimates suggest a pricing range between Rs 16 lakh and 20 lakh (ex-showroom).

While the Armada name is undoubtedly laden with sentimental value and appears to be a fitting choice, it's essential to emphasize that the act of trademarking a name does not guarantee its ultimate usage. Nevertheless, Mahindra is poised to introduce a more spacious and feature-rich Thar, promising enthusiasts a fresh and exhilarating adventure on four wheels.
