Mahindra Thar 5-Door Interior Reveals New Features

Mahindra Thar 5-Door Interior Reveals New Features

Mahindra has been engaged in extensive testing of the upcoming 5-door Thar for approximately a year and a half. While we've previously shared numerous spy images, a recent sighting of the interior has unveiled additional features that distinguish the 5-door variant from its 3-door counterpart. Anticipated to hit the market by the middle of the upcoming year, the 5-door Thar is undergoing refinement to offer an enhanced driving experience.

Interior Upgrades and Features

The 5-door Thar is set to receive notable improvements in its interior. A prominent enhancement includes a larger touchscreen display, potentially a 10-inch unit, housed in a new layout with improved interface and graphics. This modification will prompt a slight redesign of the dashboard. However, certain elements such as the AC vents, HVAC controls, and the array of toggle switches at the bottom, as observed in recent images, will be retained without significant alterations. Additionally, the physical buttons and rotary dial below the screen, present in the regular Thar, are also part of the continuity.

An interesting revelation is the inclusion of individual armrests for the front seats and rear AC vents, features absent in the 3-door Thar. While the test mule currently showcases dummy seats at the rear, it remains to be seen whether Mahindra will offer a conventional bench seat or two individual seats, mirroring the configuration in the standard Thar.

Notable Additions Over the Regular Thar

Beyond these enhancements, the 5-door Thar is expected to boast an improved instrument cluster featuring a larger Multi-Information Display (MID), potentially sourced from the Scorpio N model. Additionally, a dashboard camera and a single-pane sunroof, clearly visible in recent images, are among the anticipated additions. Notably, the 5-door Thar will only be available in a hardtop configuration with a fixed roof.

The standard Thar's 7-inch screen has faced criticism for its mediocre interface, display, and relatively smaller size compared to industry norms, where 8-inch units are commonplace. It is anticipated that the larger touchscreen infotainment system introduced in the 5-door variant will eventually make its way to the Thar 3-door model in subsequent updates.

Targeting Practicality and Comfort

With the introduction of the Thar 5-door, Mahindra aims to cater to SUV buyers seeking a versatile vehicle suitable for both daily commuting and off-road adventures. To distinguish it from its 3-door sibling, which is designed as a more focused off-roader, the 5-door Thar will boast a longer features list and additional creature comforts. Camouflaged test mules have hinted at a slightly altered design to set it apart visually from the 3-door version.

Powertrain Options and Performance

Under the hood, the 5-door Thar is expected to retain the current powerplant options found in its 3-door counterpart. This includes the 2.2-litre diesel engine and the 2.0-litre petrol engine, coupled with the same 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. While the off-road hardware will be carried forward, adjustments to the suspension setup are anticipated due to the longer wheelbase and increased weight.

Expected Debut and Pricing

The 5-door Thar is projected to make its debut around mid-2024. Considering the added features and enhancements, it is anticipated that the 5-door variant will be priced considerably higher than the regular Thar, likely falling in the range of Rs 16 lakh to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). As Mahindra continues to fine-tune this offering, enthusiasts and SUV aficionados await its official unveiling to experience the blend of practicality and off-road prowess.
