Kia Showcases All-Electric EV5 SUV in China, Launching Soon

The Kia EV5 was showcased earlier this year in near-production concept form that hinted at design inspiration from the larger EV9 SUV. KIA Motors has officially introduced the KIA EV5 electric SUV at the Chengdu Motor Show in China, marking its global premiere. This new EV5 shares the E-GMP platform with KIA's other electric SUVs, namely the EV6 and EV9. Depending on the specific markets, the SUV will come with various battery pack options.

  • Kia EV5 showcased at Chengdu Motor Show.
  • It is the third dedicated electric vehicle from Kia after EV6 and EV9.
  • To be launched first in China, followed by other markets.
  • Full technical specifications will be revealed closer to launch.

Exterior Design:

The EV5 exhibits the versatile E-GMP skateboard platform, drawing inspiration from KIA's 'Opposites United' design philosophy. It bears a striking resemblance to its larger counterpart, the EV9. The unique 'Digital Tiger Face' concept, reminiscent of the tiger nose grille, adds an intriguing element to its visual appeal. The front end features signature star map lighting, while the rear displays distinctive pushed-back D-pillars.

This newly revealed KIA EV5 will offer a choice of 10 exterior colors, including nine glossy finishes and one matte hue. Among the glossy options are snow white pearl, clear white, starry night black, magma red, ivory silver, frost blue, iceberg green, tide blue, and shale grey. The tenth color variation presents a matte rendition of ivory silver.

Interior Design:

Inside the electric SUV, a minimalist design approach dominates the dashboard, housing a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an equally sized digital instrument cluster.

The dashboard and steering wheel arrangement bears a resemblance to the design seen in the KIA EV9 SUV. The interior boasts 64-color ambient lighting, diverse seat upholstery colors, and varied leather materials.

Battery and Power:

The specifics of the EV's battery remain undisclosed. It is expected to feature a rear-mounted single motor generating 215bhp and 310 Nm of torque. While the battery capacity information is yet to be revealed, indications suggest it will use a 400V wiring system. Additionally, a possibility looms for the introduction of an EV5 GT variant equipped with a 4WD configuration.

Market and Competition:

Expectations are high for the global market regarding the KIA EV5, with speculation surrounding its potential entry into India. However, the certainty of its presence in the Indian market remains uncertain for now. The KIA EV5 will compete with well-known EVs globally, such as the Skoda Enyaq and Mercedes-Benz EQB.

Launch and Rivals:

The KIA EV5 has been unveiled initially for the Chinese market and will later expand to select global markets. Detailed product information is set to be released in October. The EV5 will compete with other EVs like the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Skoda Enyaq iV. The launch timeline for India is not confirmed, but the EV9 is expected to go on sale in India next year, following the introduction of the EV6 in 2022.
