Kia Carens EV Confirmed for Indian Release in 2025

At the 2024 Kia Investor Day meeting held in South Korea, the carmaker unveiled its global future plans, which include the introduction of the Carens EV in the Indian market. Initially mentioned in 2022 as an India-focused recreational EV based on the 3-row MPV, the Kia Carens EV is now becoming a reality. Currently, the only all-electric offering from Kia in India is the EV6, with the flagship Kia EV9 SUV scheduled to launch later in 2024.

Expected Electric Powertrain

Details regarding the technical specifications of the upcoming Carens EV for India were not disclosed by the company. However, it is anticipated to offer a claimed range of approximately 400-500 km with a single motor setup. The vehicle is also likely to support DC fast charging and V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality.

Part of New Models Announced

The Carens EV is part of Kia's plan to introduce 15 EVs into its global lineup by 2027, which includes the recently unveiled EV5. While these models are designated for specific markets, only the Carens EV has been confirmed for India thus far. Production of both EVs and internal combustion engine (ICE) models will take place at Kia's 13 factories worldwide, with two additional EV-specific plants to be established in South Korea.

Likely to be Feature-rich

Although specific details about the features of the Carens EV are limited, it is expected to be well-equipped. The electric MPV is anticipated to offer dual digital displays (each 10.25 inches for infotainment and instrumentation), wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof similar to the standard Carens. Safety features are likely to include six airbags (standard), electronic stability control (ESC), and front and rear parking sensors. Additionally, the Carens EV may incorporate advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) features, aligning with Kia's goal to equip over 63 percent of its models with such safety technology by 2026.

Expected Launch and Price

The Kia Carens EV is projected to be available for purchase in India in 2025, positioned as the most affordable electric MPV in the country. Prices are expected to start from Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), making it a compelling option in the market. While it may not have a direct competitor at launch, it will offer a more affordable alternative to the BYD E6. A potential electric MPV from Maruti is anticipated by 2026, while hybrid options such as the Toyota Innova Hycross/Maruti Invicto are already available for those interested in alternative powertrains.
