BYD, the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, has introduced a new hybrid sedan, the Glory Edition of the Qin Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid, to cater to the demand for affordable EVs in China's slowing economy. Priced at 79,800 yuan (~$11,000 or Rs 9.11 lakh), this new variant is set to challenge popular rivals like the Volkswagen Lavida and Toyota Corolla.
Affordable Pricing to Disrupt the Market
The Glory Edition is significantly cheaper than its competitors, being about 15% less expensive than the Volkswagen Lavida and more than 40% cheaper than the base version of the Toyota Corolla. It is also more than 50% cheaper than the hybrid Toyota Prius. With its competitive pricing, the Glory Edition aims to create a major disruption in the Class-A (compact) car segment and attract consumers looking for affordably priced EVs.
Powertrain and Features
The Glory Edition shares the same powertrain as other Qin Plus DM-i variants, with a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine delivering 110 hp and 135 Nm of torque, paired with an electric motor available in two configurations (180 hp / 316 Nm and 197 hp / 325 Nm). It offers two battery pack options, with the Glory Edition likely equipped with the lower capacity 8.32 kWh pack, providing an all-electric range of 55 km.
Despite its affordable price, the Glory Edition doesn't skimp on comfort and convenience. The cabin features a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, and can be upgraded with leather seats, a leather dashboard, metal speaker grilles, and air vents.
BYD's Plans for the Indian Market
BYD is also eyeing the Indian market with upcoming models like the BYD Dolphin EV, BYD Seal, BYD Seagull, and BYD Sea Lion, aiming to expand its presence in the electric vehicle segment.
With its competitive pricing and features, the Glory Edition of the Qin Plus DM-i hybrid sedan is poised to accelerate the shift from ICE to EVs and offer a serious alternative to established rivals in the market.
