Hyundai, Kia, and Samsung Set the Stage for the Next Generation of Connected Cars

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have entered into an agreement with Samsung Electronics, signed on January 3, to establish a Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car service partnership. This collaboration aims to elevate the connectivity between residential spaces and mobility by integrating Hyundai and Kia connected car services with Samsung's Internet of Things (IoT) platform, 'SmartThings.'

Remote Control of Digital Appliances

Customers of Hyundai and Kia will have the capability to remotely control digital appliances in their homes using touch and voice commands through their cars' in-car infotainment systems. Similarly, users can employ AI speakers, TVs, and smartphone apps for remote control of various vehicle functions.

Integration of Services

The partnership focuses on the seamless integration of Hyundai and Kia's connected car services with Samsung's 'SmartThings' IoT platform. This integration enables uninterrupted connectivity experiences for users in their daily lives.

Use Cases

Users can employ different modes, such as 'Home Mode' and 'Away Mode,' to control home appliances and vehicle functions based on their specific needs. For instance, initiating the 'Home Mode' during a hot summer evening commute can activate the air conditioner, air purifier, robot vacuum, and lights, creating a comfortable living space.

Car-to-Home Service

Hyundai and Kia's Car-to-Home service allows users to register specific modes for different situations, minimizing device operation while driving. Location-based automatic operation, touchscreen, and voice commands enhance the convenience of this service.

Expansion Plans

The companies aim to expand the Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services globally by linking connected car platforms and Samsung SmartThings. To achieve this, they plan to develop stable service-providing infotainment systems and offer these features through over-the-air (OTA) and USB-based updates for existing vehicles.

Electric Vehicle Integration

Electric vehicle owners can leverage SmartThings' integrated home energy management service to monitor and adjust the energy usage of their home and vehicle, optimizing charging times.

The collaboration between Hyundai, Kia, and Samsung signifies a significant step toward enhancing the synergy between smart homes and connected vehicles. By enabling users to control digital devices at home via their cars and vice versa the partnership introduces a new level of convenience and integration into users' daily lives. The planned global expansion and integration with electric vehicles showcase the commitment to delivering advanced and interconnected mobility solutions. The development of stable infotainment systems and the emphasis on over-the-air updates reflect the companies' forward-looking approach to technology integration in the automotive industry.
