Honda Revives the Civic Hybrid

Honda is making a comeback with the Civic Hybrid, targeting customers who seek a touch of electrification in their vehicles. Although this isn't Honda's first foray into the hybrid market, having introduced the Civic Hybrid about two decades ago, it was discontinued in certain markets, including the United States, in 2015. Honda is now preparing the relaunch of a hybrid Civic that will be offered in sedan and hatchback configurations.

Domestic Manufacturing Emphasis

To emphasize the domestic production of various components, Honda highlights that the two-motor hybrid-electric power unit is manufactured at the Honda Transmission Plant, while the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is produced at the Anna Engine Plant, both situated in Ohio. These same facilities already support the production of the Honda CR-V hybrid.

Powertrain Specifications

While specific powertrain details for the U.S. market are yet to be disclosed, European-spec Civic Hybrids generate 181 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the North American market's CR-V Hybrid, which employs a similar powertrain configuration, delivers 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque.

Production Locations and Timeline

Production of the new Civic hybrid sedan is scheduled to commence in spring 2024 at Honda's Alliston, Ontario plant, followed by the hatchback version, which will be manufactured at the Indiana Auto Plant.

Ambitious Sales Targets

Honda is optimistic that the Civic Hybrid will account for more than 40 percent of Civic sales. This might sound ambitious, but considering that over 56 percent of American sales for the CR-V and Accord are hybrids and more than a quarter of Honda's total sales in the U.S. involve some form of electrification, it appears to be a feasible goal.

Honda's Electrification Strategy

This reintroduction aligns with Honda's broader electrification strategy, which aims to equip its core models with hybrid-electric systems, signaling the company's commitment to adopting electrified powertrains. Honda's strategy reflects the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles and their commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their automobiles. By incorporating hybrid technology into popular models like the Civic, Honda hopes to make electrification more accessible and demonstrate its dedication to a sustainable automotive future. This move also supports the global shift towards cleaner and greener transportation options, aligning with industry trends and government regulations aimed at reducing emissions.
