The Citroen C3 hatchback, part of the brand's C-cubed program in India, is set to receive a much-needed boost with the addition of an automatic gearbox option and several feature updates. Despite its competitive pricing, the C3 has struggled with sales, partly due to the absence of an automatic transmission and some key features.
Introduction of Automatic Gearbox
By June 2024, Citroen plans to introduce a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox for the C3 hatchback. This gearbox is currently available in the C3 Aircross SUV and will be paired with the 110hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The addition of an automatic transmission is expected to enhance the appeal of the C3 especially among urban buyers who prefer the convenience of an automatic in city traffic.
Expected Pricing
The automatic variants of the C3 Aircross are priced about Rs 1.30 lakh higher than their manual counterparts. It is reasonable to expect a similar premium for the C3 hatchback's automatic variants. Currently, the turbo-petrol manual variants of the C3 are priced between Rs 8.43 lakh and Rs 8.96 lakh (ex-showroom). The introduction of the automatic gearbox may slightly increase the price compared to its rivals, but the smoothness and sophistication of a torque converter are likely to give it an edge over the AMT options offered in competing models like the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.
Upcoming Feature Updates
In addition to the automatic gearbox, Citroen is also planning to introduce several new features to the C3. These include automatic air conditioning, a foldable key, and LED headlights. Furthermore, the company has committed to equipping the C3 with six airbags, ISOFIX anchorages, and rear seatbelt reminders as standard by mid-2024, addressing some of the safety concerns highlighted in the recent Global NCAP crash test of the eC3 hatchback.
Expected Facelift
A more comprehensive facelift for the Citroen C3 is expected next year. This update is likely to include a thorough redesign of both the exterior and interior further enhancing the appeal of the hatchback in the competitive Indian market.
