Honda has discontinued the diesel variant of the Honda Amaze in the Indian market due to the upcoming stricter Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms. The diesel engine, which was a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit producing 100 bhp and 200 Nm of torque, is no longer available. I believe this move is a significant shift towards complying with emission standards, but it might disappoint those who preferred the diesel option for its performance and mileage.

The Honda Amaze diesel was the last diesel model in its segment, and its discontinuation marks the end of an era for diesel subcompact sedans in India. The car will now be available only with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which produces 90 bhp and 110 Nm of torque. I think this change will push buyers towards petrol or alternative fuel options, which could be a mixed bag for consumers.

Prior to its discontinuation, the Honda Amaze diesel was known for its punchy performance and better mileage compared to the petrol variant. It was also the only sub-4m sedan to offer a CVT gearbox with a diesel engine. I believe this unique selling point will be missed by many who valued the diesels performance and efficiency.

The decision to discontinue the diesel Amaze is largely driven by the need to comply with the new BS6 phase II emission norms, which include the Real Driving Emission (RDE) standards. These norms require significant investments in engine technology, leading to potential price hikes. I think this is a prudent move by Honda to avoid the financial burden of upgrading the diesel engine.

Before its discontinuation, the Honda Amaze diesel was available in various trims, including the top-end VX trim with a CVT automatic transmission. This combination offered a unique blend of performance and convenience. I believe the absence of this option will be felt by those who appreciated the diesel-CVT combo for its city and highway driving capabilities.
