Does the Toyota Vios really just a sedan Myvi or is there more to it?

Being driven extensively myself, I feel the Vios is more substantial on the road. That extra weight gives it better stability when trying to go faster. For practicality and value, it’s hard to beat the Myvi, but not for highway driving.
Does the Toyota Vios really just a sedan Myvi or is there more to it?

Is the Vios more, but is it worth the price difference? Probably not for most people. For 90% of what the Vios does, the Myvi does it for a lot less money. If you don’t really need a sedan, the Myvi is the smarter choice.
So why do people still continue to buy the Vios even if it’s not really that good looking and doesn’t have that much features?

It’s about reliability and resale value. They know that a Vios will run forever with very little trouble, and if they sell it they’ll get a good price. Many buyers would rather have that peace of mind instead of fancy features.
So why do people still continue to buy the Vios even if it’s not really that good looking and doesn’t have that much features?

Part of it is Toyota's marketing, I think. For years they've marketed the Vios as the 'sensible' choice, and that image sticks. It’s also what people are used to seeing on roads, so it seems like a safe bet.

Being someone who went for a Vios, it's not about excitement, it's practicality. Good fuel efficiency, comfortable enough ride for daily use and low maintenance costs. Not everyone wants or needs a flashy car.
So why do people still continue to buy the Vios even if it’s not really that good looking and doesn’t have that much features?

I never got why the Vios was popular. The more interesting options out there are those with better features for similar prices. I think people just buy it because it is a Toyota, and they don't really think about what else is out there.

In many Asian countries it's a cultural thing. The car is regarded more as a practical tool, or even dispassionately, as a nonstatus statement or, at best, a source of driving pleasure. The Vios is just that, a car that does the job without any fuss.

I can tell you I owned a Vios before and it's about the total package. Of course, it's not thrilling, but it's comfortable, convenient, and hassle free to own. When it comes to daily transportation, sometimes boring is good.
But is this good first car life with the Vios for new drivers or other options are better?

The Vios is a good first car. It's easy to drive, has good visibility and is forgiving of newbie mistakes. On top of that, it can be relied on to get you through your first years as a new driver without being stranded due to car trouble.

But I would say there are better options for first time drivers. When you’re just starting out, something smaller like a Myvi or even an Axia would be easier to park and maneuver around in tight spaces.

I learned to drive in a Vios, so I think it's a good car. It’s not too powerful to be overwhelming, but powerful enough that you won’t outgrow it as you learn and improve.

I don’t agree with recommending the Vios as a new driver car. It's a first car, and it's more expensive than it needs to be. If you don’t know much about computers, why not start with something cheaper and upgrade later when you have more experience?
But is this good first car life with the Vios for new drivers or other options are better?

I think new drivers would have more benefit from a car with advance safety features such as autonomous emergency braking but the Vios is okay. These technologies can be a real lifesaver for inexperienced drivers, and many newer, similarly priced cars offer them.
But is this good first car life with the Vios for new drivers or other options are better?

That depends on what the new driver is in. In fact, the Vios might be OK if they will be a lot of highway driving, as the car is quite stable. A smaller car would probably be better for purely city use, though.

Starting with a Vios was a good thing. It taught me good habits, you don’t drive economically because it’s underpowered but it isn’t so underpowered that you struggle in traffic. It’s a good balance to learn.
How is Vios ownership experience over the long term compared to Honda City?
31 December 2024 07:24
When it comes to long term reliability, the Vios is the one that works out better for me. My friend's City has had a few minor issues, but I have had mine for 7 years with zero issues.
How is Vios ownership experience over the long term compared to Honda City?

I've had both, and I think the City is more fun to drive in the end. Over longer periods, the interior stays good, and it feels more responsive. The Vios is reliable, but after some time it gets boring.

Long term, it appears that the Vios has lower maintenance costs. It is easy to get parts for it and they are inexpensive. I've heard from friends, and I can't say the same for the City.

In my area, the City has better resale value. The City is no exception, Hondas generally hold their value well. If you are planning to sell after a few years, something to be aware of.

I've had both, and for long term ownership, I prefer the Vios. It may not be as exciting, but it's fuss free. Sometimes the City tries too hard and the more things go wrong over time.
