How does the old V8 compare to this new twin turbo V6?
31 December 2024 06:27
There is no sound, no feel to beat a V8. For all its extra efficiency, the new engine lacks the soul of the old one. It's just not that experience however.

But I think Toyota made the right call. The V6 is very powerful and fuel saving is significant. 2024, we have to get with the times.
How does the old V8 compare to this new twin turbo V6?

Long term reliability is still an experiment. These turbos add complexity, but the V8 is bulletproof. It remains to be seen if its durability will live up to the incredible reputation of the old one.
How does the old V8 compare to this new twin turbo V6?

The V6 performs very well but I worry how it would handle Australia's Outback or even Sahara Desert. Those environments proved the V8.
How does the old V8 compare to this new twin turbo V6?

The V6 is more rounded all round. On the highway, it's a whole lot smoother, but it's got plenty of low end torque for off roading. It's a win-win in my book.
How does the old V8 compare to this new twin turbo V6?

I love the V8, but there's a reason they switched it. Toyota had to adapt, as emissions regulations get stricter. At least they didn’t go with a tiny 4 cent cylinder like other manufacturers.
Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?
31 December 2024 06:27
The new tech certainly makes it a lot more capable off road. Looking to things like the multi terrain select and crawl control when your in sticky situations.
Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?

I think they've gone too far. The simplicity was part of the Land Cruiser’s appeal. It's now another over complicated luxury SUV that would be an absolute nightmare to fix in the middle of nowhere.
Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?
31 December 2024 06:27
It's a balancing act. I don't worry very much about long term reliability, but the tech adds a lot of convenience and safety features. Toyota, at least, has a good record with electronics.
Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?
31 December 2024 06:27
It is still basically pretty straightforward mechanics. The new tech is all add-ons that you can just bypass if you need. They just made it so not possible to work on.
Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?

At least they are modernizing. That meant the Land Cruiser had to change. But if that core off road ability is there, I'm all for the new stuff.
Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?
31 December 2024 06:27
I like the tech, but I wish they'd built it more modular. Let us have the ability to add or subtract from these optional features, as needed. Not everyone needs and wants all the bells and whistles.
Is there a cost for the new tech in the LC300 taking away the rugged simplicity?

I'm torn. If the new tech makes this appeal to a wider audience, hopefully one that will keep Toyota making the Land Cruiser. Noticeably, it’s straying a bit from its roots.
Is the LC300 too luxurious to be a true off roader?
31 December 2024 06:27
It's still a beast off-road. But Toyota hasn't cut anything that mattered, including ground clearance, approach angles, or low range gearing. It’s just more comfortable when you’re not rock crawling – but I wouldn’t trade it for a 4 Runner or a Cherokee.
Is the LC300 too luxurious to be a true off roader?
31 December 2024 06:27
It's become too soft. Even with all those luxury features, it’s all that extra weight that hurts performance – especially on the low profile tires of the 'luxury' versions.
Is the LC300 too luxurious to be a true off roader?
31 December 2024 06:27
It’s, I think, the perfect balance. It’s still remarkably capable off road, but you can actually have fun driving it to work everyday as well. Why shouldn't we have both?
Is the LC300 too luxurious to be a true off roader?
31 December 2024 06:27
99% of the people will never need as much capability as LC300 can offer. It may not be the most comfortable vehicle, but if it can handle tough terrain it doesn't mean it isn't comfortable. In fact, the new tech makes it even better off road.
Is the LC300 too luxurious to be a true off roader?
31 December 2024 06:27
It's definitely more luxurious, and in the market that's what people want. At least Toyota has stuck to the core off-road DNA, at least in part, something that's lacking with some other manufacturers' design evolution of SUV.
Is the LC300 too luxurious to be a true off roader?
31 December 2024 06:27
I fear that the luxury focus will ultimately dilute the off road capabilities. It’s good now, but will the next generation be tracking over comfort, and if so, for how long?
Is the LC300 too luxurious to be a true off roader?
31 December 2024 06:27
With the correct setup, it's a real off the road vehicle. Don't bother with the 22-inch wheels and throw on the appropriate all terrains, and you suddenly have a luxury vehicle that can go anywhere. A good compromise in my opinion. A best of both worlds.
