With the new features and engine, is the Scram 440 still a true scrambler, or is it inching closer and closer to being a standard motorcycle?
Several updates included with the Scram 440 seem to be pushing it more towards the realm of standard motorcycles. Again, the LED Lighting, more powerful engine, and optional alloy wheels could be viewed as the moves to render the bike more jack of all trade purposeful. This does beg the question though, is the Scram 440 sticking to the scrambler ethos of simplicity and off road capability? Traditionally, scramblers are all about lightweight design and versatility, rather than creature comfort. Of course, some purists will argue that alloy wheels actually detract from the bike’s scrambler credentials. However, modern riders are often after some sort of refinement and features, even in retro styled bikes. And how does the Scram 440 fit into the philosophy of its design and intended use, compared to other modern scramblers? So, does the Scram 440 evolve the scrambler concept or is it drifting away from its roots?
I'd say it's still at heart a scrambler. New features make it more usable day to day, but the core design elements are there. It’s not abandoning its roots, but evolving with the times.
Honestly, RE is trying to have its cake and eat it too. The Scram 440 is no longer really a scrambler, but is becoming more of a standard bike with scrambler styling.
I ride on and off road so I appreciate the updates. These changes make the scrambler more versatile, and should be capable in different scenarios.
We're just too hung up on labels, I believe. It is what it is, the Scram 440, a fun, capable bike that can do a little bit of everything. It doesn't have to fit neatly into the "scrambler" box, who cares?
I’m a little disappointed with the purist in me. The original Scram was raw and simple and I loved it. It seems that this is more about the urban hipster than true enthusiasts.
Let’s be real, these days most scramblers are more style than substance. At least with the Scram 440, they’re at least adding things that make it more enjoyable to ride.
This, to me, is a modern take on the scrambler idea. It recognizes that riders' needs have changed since the 60s and 70s but it keeps the spirit alive.
