With a lack of diesel option, does the Hycross get itself branded as a deal breaker?

A big departure from the Innova’s usual lineup of vehicles is the Innova Hycross, which comes without an option of a diesel engine. But now India is opting for diesel engines as they are far more fuel efficient and have high torque output, especially examples include larger vehicles like MPVs and SUVs. Particularly favored where performance and economy were concerned, the Innova Crysta’s diesel variants. Nevertheless, with emission norms changing and the world moving towards cleaner fuels, Toyota has chosen to go for a petrol hybrid powertrain in the Hycross. The switch has created healthy debate among potential buyers and Innova fanatics. Others say the hybrid system is as effective, or better, at getting fuel efficiency as diesel does, while still others claim diesel’s qualities, in particular for long distances and heavy loads, cannot be replaced. It also discusses long term viability of diesel in the Indian market and whether Toyota's move towards hybrid technology is forward looking or will make the company lose out on a good chunk of its customer base.

Not at all. In real world conditions, this hybrid system is actually more efficient than the old diesel. It's also way smoother and quieter, too.

Absolute deal-breaker. You don't want to replace it with anything, a diesel engine is still the best thing, especially if you take long trips with it or you carry things with and you need the extra torque.

That’s only a deal breaker if you don’t move away from the past. In most cases, the hybrid tech is the future and does the job of diesel as well.

At first I was skeptical, but after test driving the Hycross, I don’t miss diesel at all. Electric motor draws it's instant torque.

Where there is no diesel, it is a big problem for taxi operators or people who tow often. As such, the hybrid system simply doesn't have anywhere near the amount of low end grunt both the Motor Trend and EVO guys are so obsessed with.

It's actually a positive. However, stricter emission norms have already begun to sound the death knell for diesel. Toyota is smart to focus on hybrid tech.

Now, surely lack of diesel might be an issue, but in a few years time we'll all be wondering why on earth we ever wanted noisy, smelly diesel engines in the first place.
