Will the KTM 390 SMC R work for taller/heavier riders?
The compact size and light weight of a KTM 390 SMC R has raised questions as to how it fits riders of different body types. Its tall seat height may be welcomed by those with longer legs, but there are worries about how ergonomics and suspension performance will be affected for heavier riders. Others are concerned that the bike’s power output may not seem up to snuff for larger individuals on highways. Some say the supermoto style actually offers a more roomy riding position than sportier models. Often the debate pits the potential for modifications such as handlebar risers or suspension upgrades that would make the bike more accommodating. Weight distribution and riding style may have to change to extract the most out of a smaller displacement supermoto, riders also discuss.
Tall riders will love it! Perfect for legs that are long. It might be a bit small for really heavy guys though.
So I'm 6'2" and 220lbs and most small bikes feel like toys. I’d probably overwork that engine on the highway, but this one could be fun.
It's all about technique. A small bike can dance, if a skilled bigger rider can make it do that. And the SMC R has adjustable suspension, which you can dial in.
To be honest, KTM just tends to make their bikes for taller riders. I bet it’ll be more roomy than you’d think it would be.
Height isn’t as much of an issue as weight. If you're pushing 250lbs+ you might want more bike, but a tall skinny guy will be just fine.
Remember, supermotos are supposed to be thrown around. A bigger rider would probably rather have more leverage over the bike.
Test ride it if you are worried. All bodies are different and you won’t know until you sit on it and take it for a spin.
