Will the Flying Flea S6's scrambler styling make it off road, or is it all for show?

Royal Enfield markets its Flying Flea S6 electric motorcycle as a scrambler style, a term often associated with some off road capability. But there's still debate as to whether its capabilities will live up to its rugged appearance. Historically scramblers were street bikes that had been modified for light off road use, but modern interpretations often favour style over function. And off road intentions are hinted at with spoked wheels, dual purpose tyres and longer travel suspension on the S6. But weight distribution, ground clearance and the properties of electric powertrains in off road situations are important. Furthermore, the placement of the battery and the bike's electronic systems will have bearing upon the bike's ability to withstand rough terrain. The question being asked by riders is whether the S6 will be a true dual sport or just an urban bike with occasional gravel road jaunts.

The real test, however, will be how it fares over water crossings and through mud. Water and electric components don't always go hand in hand.

It will likely be a scrambler like most modern scramblers – good for light off road use but really meant for street riding with a bit of attitude.

I'm optimistic. Off road, Royal Enfield has been killing it with their 350 and 650 twins. They know what they're doing.

I’d be happy as long as it can handle fire roads and some mild single track. Not everybody needs a full blown enduro bike.

Actually, the instant torque from the electric motor could be great off road. If RE tunes it right, might surprise a lot of people.

All show, no go. However, electric bikes are too heavy to do serious off roading with. Although it’ll look cool parked at the cafe.

I can bet that it'll do just fine on gravel roads and light trails. It won’t be a hardcore dirt bike, but that’s not what scramblers are about anyway.
