Will the ADAS features of the Mahindra BE.05 be practical on Indian roads?
The Mahindra BE.05 will come with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. These technologies are becoming common in the Western markets, but their effectiveness on Indian roads is still debatable. Traffic in India is notorious — vehicles and pedestrians rush heedless of lane markings, regulations and various wild animals might suddenly dart across your path. The worry is how well these systems will function in such an environment. Will it be constantly beeping and intervening, annoying to drive? But could they actually help to improve safety in such challenging conditions? But will Indian drivers trust and use these features or will they just turn them off? The way in which ADAS has been implemented on the BE.05 may become a trend for how these technologies are adopted for the Indian market.
I think it'll be a disaster. ADAS is intended for orderly Western roads, not our beautiful chaos. It'll freak out every 5 seconds and become more of a headache than a help.
In fact, it might work better than we think. While it may not be perfect, it’s better than nothing. Preventing accidents, particularly for less experienced drivers, is what it could help in.
The real question is if it will work in the rain during monsoon season. If it can handle that, it can handle anything!
I'm excited to try it out. It's not perfect but it’s a step towards safer roads. Why can’t Mahindra bring these features to India?
The systems for India will probably have to be seriously tweaked. However, if they do it right, it could be a huge selling point. Can you imagine relaxing a little in bumper to bumper traffic?
