What’s the difference between the Husqvarna 701 Enduro and the KTM 690 Enduro R?
The comparison of the KTM 690 Enduro R and Husqvarna 701 Enduro is often made, largely thanks to the design similarities and the fact they have the same parent company. The two bikes have single-cylinder engines powerful enough to power them and are marketed as dual-sport bikes. Although only subtle, there are some differences in suspension, ergonomics, and overall character that can make one rider prefer one over the other. In this question, we examine the subtleties that differentiate these two widely favored models with a focus on their on- and off-road suitability, comfort, maintenance, and riding versatility. For big-bore dual sport riders struggling to choose between these two closely related but different options, this is highly relevant.
Essentially, they're the same bike with different plastics. I've ridden both, and I cannot tell much difference in performance. At the end of the day, it’s all about what look you like and whether the dealer support is good in your area.
I actually prefer the 701. It has a bit of a more plush suspension, and I like the ergonomics better for long rides. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either.
To me the 690 felt a bit more dirt-oriented. At least from the factory, the 701 seems to have a slightly road-biased setup. Either bike will suit your style, but with a few mods.
I went for the 690 because I like KTM’s dealer network and parts availability. They're practically identical in terms of performance, but depending on where you live, the long-term ownership experience can be different.
Both having owned them, I'd say the 701 has a slightly smoother engine character. It’s not a big difference, but you can feel it on long rides. It’s a bit more raw and aggressive.
The deciding factor for me was the looks. The KTM orange, and the more angular design of the 690, is something that I love. It's a split hair performance-wise.
I think the 701 is slightly the more refined of the two and perhaps the nicer one to live with on the road. Where the 690 feels a bit more at home in the dirt. That really depends on what your riding priorities are.
I rode both as a test ride and went with the 690 because it felt a little more nimble off-road. The 701 felt slightly more top heavy, but it was really close.
