What’s the character and riding experience like on the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory compared to its Japanese rivals?

There are also comparisons with Japanese naked bikes such as the Yamaha MT 10 SP, Kawasaki Z H2 or Honda CB1000R. Though these bikes fall into the same category, they are different in the way they ride. The V4 engine character, race derived chassis and Italian flair are what the Tuono is known for. Japanese bikes tend to be sedately reliable and refined. Riders argue over whether the Tuono's raw, emotional appeal is superior to the possible more practical, user friendly nature of its Japanese counterparts. When enthusiasts compare these machines, factors such as engine character, electronics packages, build quality and overall 'soul' of the bikes are involved.

But that comes at a price, and the Tuono feels more special. More often than not, Japanese bikes make more sense, and are easier to live with on a day to day basis.

If you want pure performance, there's little to beat the Tuono. However, Japanese bikes often have better dealer networks and cost less to keep in the real world.

The Tuono is better than the Japanese bikes which are technically excellent but have that X factor. It’s like comparing a finely tuned instrument to a wild animal.

I’ve ridden both, and the Tuono has a bit more soul. You can't put a number on it, but you just feel something you don't with the Japanese bikes.

It's apples and oranges. Japanese nakeds are often more street focused, while the Tuono feels like a race bike with handlebars. Both have their place.

Japanese bikes are probably more reliable and more refined. It’s exciting, but for day to day use an MT 10 would be easier to live with.

There is no league for the Tuono. There is a character to that V4 engine that no inline four can match. It's just raw, visceral and you just feel like it's special in a way that Japanese bikes aren't.
