What will the Hero Surge S32's unique design mean for its safety features?

Vehicle design is a safety centric problem, taking it a notch up, the Hero surge S32 meant to be a transformable vehicle introduces unique challenges and opportunities to accomplish this safety goal. The ability to switch between a three wheel and a two wheel configuration raises the issue of stability, crash protection and general structural integrity. The vehicle's dual modes may require traditional safety features to be reimaged. But also the question of how safety systems such as airbags or crumple zones would work in a vehicle that was designed to be split apart. In addition, the mechanism of the transformation itself introduces new potential failure points (which can affect safety). Moreover, the vehicle's hybrid nature may make it difficult to classify into the existing safety standards, probably causing the need for new safety standards to be developed. The safety implications of transforming the vehicle in various traffic conditions, and user behavior are also to be considered.

I wonder if it'll have some kind of smart safety system built in that won't let it transform when it's not safe.

It may be safer for pedestrians. In a constricted area, it could have the ability to switch to a smaller, more maneuverable form so to avoid collisions.

But the extra complexity might present problems if the engineers of tomorrow have accidents with it. Special training will be required.

I wonder about the crash tests. How do you test something like this? It has to be safe in both configurations.

The safety feature itself could be the transformation mechanism. What if you could detach the scooter really quickly if you needed to?

In some ways, it may actually be safer than traditional scooters. New riders or in bad weather the three wheeler mode could be more stable.

I'm worried about stability. If a three wheeler is designed to split in half, how safe can it be?
