Was the S-Cross hybrid system really useful, or simply a gimmick?
Later iterations of the S-Cross received a mild hybrid system, named the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki). This system comprised idle start stop, brake energy regeneration, and torque assist. It said it improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Owners and enthusiasts have debated, however, about the real world benefits of this system. They argue the fuel economy improvements were minimal, and didn't justify the added complexity and cost. Some applaud the perfectly functioning start–stop system and benefit from the tiny, but palpable gain in efficiency while driving in city. In addition, discussions have taken place regarding the long term reliability and maintenance costs of the hybrid components.
Total gimmick. I hardly saw any difference in fuel economy versus the non hybrid version.
