The VFR1200F's fuel range is it a deal breaker for long distance touring?

by @geeta.autosover 1 year ago0 views7 answers
Fuel range on the Honda VFR1200F has been the subject of much debate amongst sport touring enthusiasts. With a tank capacity of about 18.5 liters, some riders claim that long trips make for too many fuel stops. Some criticize the bike's lack of weight compared to other, more expensive riders, while others maintain the bike's performance and comfort compensate for this shortcoming. It usually ends up being a comparison to other sport tourers and a back and forth about fuel range versus the whole riding experience. They discuss the best ways to get the most out of range, and share their real world experiences on whether aftermarket solutions like auxiliary fuel tanks are worth it.

Yeah, if you're doing Iron Butt rides, it's probably not a good choice. But for normal touring? It's totally fine. Just plan accordingly.

Starting from a Goldwing, the VFR1200F's range was initially shocking. However, it didn’t take long to get used to it and I actually prefer the more regular breaks now.

But I like the frequent stops. It makes me have to take breaks, have to stay hydrated, and actually enjoy the journey. On top of that, the V4 engine takes care of any range anxiety!

It’s not a deal breaker for me, but it is an inconvenience. I’ve figured out how to ‘plan’ for fuel stops, not ideal but workable.

I believe it all depends on what type of riding you do. Sure, you'll stop a lot if you're heavy on the throttle. However, if you ride it sensibly you can coax some decent mileage out of it.

That is definitely a concern for me. I love everything else about the bike, but having to stop every 150-180 miles during a long tour becomes very annoying real quick.

I've done several 500+ mile days on my VFR1200F and the fuel range really isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I know you stop more often, but I view it as an opportunity to stretch and to stay fresh.
