So why do people still continue to buy the Vios even if it’s not really that good looking and doesn’t have that much features?

For years, the Toyota Vios has been a consistent best seller in many Southeast Asian markets, but has often come in for criticism for its conservative styling and somewhat basic feature set compared to some competitors. It makes one wonder what it is that really drives car buying decisions in these markets. More important than cutting edge design or the latest tech features, are factors such as brand reputation, perceived reliability, and resale value. In addition, it discusses the cultural aspects of car ownership and the part that 'safe' choices play in major purchases. It would be quite interesting to understand what has led to the Vios’ longevity and the reasons for its enduring sales success in Indonesia, given that this represents a case of a uniquely successful car that is actively upstaging much stronger market leaders amongst Indonesian car buyers. An investigation into this may provide insights about how consumers behave in the context of the automotive market and the balance between The Practical and The Emotional in the buying decision process.

It’s about reliability and resale value. They know that a Vios will run forever with very little trouble, and if they sell it they’ll get a good price. Many buyers would rather have that peace of mind instead of fancy features.

Part of it is Toyota's marketing, I think. For years they've marketed the Vios as the 'sensible' choice, and that image sticks. It’s also what people are used to seeing on roads, so it seems like a safe bet.

Being someone who went for a Vios, it's not about excitement, it's practicality. Good fuel efficiency, comfortable enough ride for daily use and low maintenance costs. Not everyone wants or needs a flashy car.

I never got why the Vios was popular. The more interesting options out there are those with better features for similar prices. I think people just buy it because it is a Toyota, and they don't really think about what else is out there.

In many Asian countries it's a cultural thing. The car is regarded more as a practical tool, or even dispassionately, as a nonstatus statement or, at best, a source of driving pleasure. The Vios is just that, a car that does the job without any fuss.

I can tell you I owned a Vios before and it's about the total package. Of course, it's not thrilling, but it's comfortable, convenient, and hassle free to own. When it comes to daily transportation, sometimes boring is good.
