So, is the Celerio X's three star GNCAP rating a safer bet than newer rivals?
Crash test ratings are becoming more important for Indian car buyers and safety is a growing factor, too. The Celerio X, a version of the previous generation Celerio, scored 3 stars in Global NCAP crash tests. During that time and that segment, this rating was considered decent. But more recently, some newer rivals have come into the market with different safety credentials. Some have been tested and achieved higher star ratings, and some have not been tested or have scored lower. As a result, there's been a debate over whether the Celerio X's known 3 star rating makes it a safer bet than untested or lower rated newer models or whether, because newer cars have seen advances in vehicle structure and safety tech, they could actually be safer even without official ratings.
That's still pretty solid, 3 stars from a few years ago. I'd put my faith in that, any day over an untested new model.
Safety tech is better in newer cars, even if they don’t have ratings. It would be a recent model with 6 airbags over an older 3 star car.
It's not just about stars. Regardless of what they say, on the light weight of the vehicle, it could be less safe in a crash involving a heavier vehicle.
Peace of mind comes from the rating, but it isn’t everything. Safety depends hugely on driving habits and road conditions.
I'd say it's a toss-up. The X has a proven rating, but newer rivals might be better at crumpling and stronger. Tough call!
Don’t forget the standards for the tests have been made stricter. Back then a 3 star might just be a 2 star now.
The rating applies to the whole range, including the lower variants, of the Celerio X. In fact, the top spec X with added safety features could actually be even safer.
