Let’s compare the Continental GT 650 to its modern retro alternatives.
Retro motorcycle popularity has skyrocketed as manufacturers have begun to release their interpretations of classic designs with modern technology. In this space, the Continental GT 650 finds a rival in bikes such as the Triumph Thruxton, Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe and even the more expensive Moto Guzzi V7. Performance metrics are often the point of comparison, but so are authenticity of the retro experience, build quality, and value for money. The GT 650 is priced in an interesting way, sometimes undercutting the competition by a huge margin. This inevitably sparks debates about whether it can compete with the refinement and performance of its more expensive counterparts, or simply provide a better overall package for an enthusiast that wants to experience retro riding without having to pay an arm and a leg.
For value, it’s hard to beat the GT 650. Yes, the Triumph is more refined, but is it twice as much car? Not for me.
I test rode the Z900RS and the GT 650. The Enfield is just more characterful but the Kawasaki is smoother and faster.
As a cafe racer, the GT feels a lot more authentic. This feels like the real deal, many modern retros are just styled to look old.
Quality of build isn't up to Japanese or European standards, but it's close enough and a lot less money.
The GT is also more accessible and I love that. Great for the scene — it’s bringing the retro experience to a wider audience.
The transverse V-twin of the Moto Guzzi V7 has a little more soul but the GT 650 is more practical for daily use.
Others are better for pure performance. The GT 650 is hard to beat in terms of overall package of looks, sound and riding experience.
