It’s said that the Toyota Hilux is literally indestructible but is this really true?
The Toyota Hilux became the paragon of toughness and reliability, shown in the most extreme stunts and places and inside the conflict areas of the world. However is it really earned or has the years blown it all out of proportion? Some point out today’s Hilux models have lost their edge, becoming softer, more luxurious and less rugged. Some say alternative pickup trucks have actually caught up in terms of durability. In this post, we’re going to see if the Hilux can really be called unkillable in the modern automotive age or if that reputation is more marketing than substance.

Depends on the generation. Once, the older models were absolute tanks, newer ones have sacrificed a bit of durability for the benefit of comfort and emissions compliance.

It's partly marketing hype. Other trucks such as the Ford Ranger are just as tough, but their legendary status is long gone.

It is well deserved reputation. Who would want to buy a truck, and this is why in developing countries, these things survive conditions that would destroy other trucks.

It is tough, but not unbreakable. But these modern Hiluxes are comfortable and packed with tech, therefore more to break.

Absolutely! I’ve seen Hiluxes get beaten black and blue and continue on in the truck. He still has an 90s model that is over 400,000km and still runs like a champ.
