Is the tech heavy interior of the Hyundai Tucson a step forward for the brand, or a usability nightmare?
The Hyundai Tucson gets a techy interior, complete with a large touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster. Traditional physical buttons are replaced by touch sensitive panels that incorporate many controls, including climate and audio. This gives a sleek modern look however, it has set users hot debate about its practicality when used on daily basis. Clean look, advanced, says some, but no tactile feedback or potential distractions when driving, say others. And you have the question of long term durability and the cost of repairs of these complex systems. The tech forward approach keeps the Tucson competitive and attractive to younger buyers, argue supporters, but critics worry about the learning curve and potential frustration for those accustomed to more traditional layouts. The debate centers around whether Hyundai found the right harmony between innovation and usability within the Tucson’s interior layout.
I have to say that adjusting the AC while driving can be a bit of a pain, but I love the clean look of the interior. It’s still a premium feeling though, so it’s worth it.
I’m not super tech savvy and I hate that there are no physical buttons. I’ve missed being able to adjust things by feel, without having to take my eyes off the road.
I got used to it in a week or two, and now I love the tech heavy interior. Driving a spaceship compared to my old car!
I'm concerned about how well those touch panels will last. In a few years when the screen starts to get glitchy what happens? It seems like an expensive fix.
It’s cool tech, but I wish Hyundai had found a middle ground. Perhaps physical controls for those things you need to adjust often, while having touch for less frequent adjustments?
In fact, I ended up returning my Tucson because I just couldn’t get used to the touch controls. I loved everything else about the car, but safety comes first for me, so it’s a shame.
