Is the Royal Enfield Bullet Trials 500 really good for off roading or it's just a style statement?
The Bullet Trials 500 is sold as a scrambler style bike with off road ability, with knobbly tires, raised bars and a high pipe. But some riders point out that its weight and lack of modern suspension make it more a light trails bike than an off roader. Some have even questioned if the bike isn't just a design project, given its vintage inspired design and limited production run. There are plenty of enthusiasts debating whether the Trials 500 finds the right balance of retro charm and practical off road ability – or whether it's a bike that's really only designed to attract urban riders, who want a hefty looking bike that they can occasionally ride off road at weekends.
There's no doubt this is more style than substance for serious off road use. I’ve run mine on some light trails, and it looks the part, but the weight seriously hampers it when things get rough.
Surprisingly capable off road if you know how to drive it, I disagree. It’s not a modern dirt bike, sure, but that’s not the point. It feels classic scrambler, just fun on gravel roads and mild trails.
If you're being real, most people buying this bike aren't hardcore off roaders. It's exactly what it is: a cool looking bike that can take the odd bit of rough stuff on the weekend. Not all off road bikes have to be capable of conquering the Dakar Rally.
I think it's a bit of both. On dirt roads and light trails, the Trials 500 is genuinely decent, but it’s also clearly designed to look good parked outside a hipster cafe. And you know what? That's nothing wrong with it.
And having owned one for a year, I'd say it's more capable than people give it credit for. No, it's not a modern enduro, but you still have that old school charm of working out how to get over obstacles with little tech. It's a different kind of fun.
