Is the R1300GSA's new tech overkill for an adventure bike?
The BMW R1300GS Adventure has all the latest technology, including advanced rider aids, a sophisticated TFT display and connectivity. These additions are intended to further safety, comfort and convenience, but they have also provoked a debate among adventure riding purists. Others say that too much technology is at odds with the spirit of adventure motorcycling, which has traditionally been about simplicity and self reliance. These complex systems raise concerns about the reliability and repairability of these complex systems in remote areas, and the information overload while riding. However, advocates of the new tech say it makes the bicycle more versatile and available to a broader audience of riders. This question is part of a larger debate within the motorcycle community as to where technology fits in today’s bikes and if it makes for a better or worse ride.
Not at all! The bike is safer and more versatile because of the tech. It’s great for long distance adventure riding.
Totally overkill. Simple and robust is what adventure bikes should be. It’s just more stuff to break when I’m out in the middle of nowhere.
I like the tech, but I wish they offered a more stripped down version for purists.
The only part that is overkill is if you do not use it. But if you learn how to leverage the tech, it will make your adventures better.
The new tech is great. Having the ability to change settings on the fly makes for a bike that can be adapted to all conditions.
It's a bit much for me. I’d rather have a more raw, more connected riding experience without all the electronic interference.
Touring tech is great, but I'm concerned about how durable it will be in some really rough off road conditions.
It's not overkill, it's progress. Just because you are going adventuring doesn’t mean you have to go back in time technologically.
