Is the Nissan Terra's off road ability as good as they say?
Nissan Terra is promoted as an off road SUV with four wheel drive, high ground clearance and several terrain modes. Opinions are divided, though, on how well it actually works once the pavement ends. Owners praise it for its ability to navigate rough terrain and muddier conditions, but others feel it doesn’t compare to well established off road vehicles. The most common topic of debate is whether or not the off road features of Terra are really useful for everyday drivers or if they are just a marketing gimmick. Comparisons to other SUVs in its class and discussions of actual real world off road scenarios that a typical Terra owner might find themselves in, make up much of this discussion.
As anyone who has taken the Terra out on some gnarly trails will attest, it’s surprisingly capable. It’s not a Jeep Wrangler, but it’ll get most people through most off road situations they’ll ever find themselves in.
I don’t think the off road hype is real. Yes, it can go on a dirt road, but anything rougher and you'll be longing for a 'proper' 4x4.
It’s good for light off roading but I wouldn’t push it to hard. Great for camping trips or getting to a remote beach, but not hardcore rock crawling.
For most people, the Terra has more than enough off road capability. How many SUV owners actually do real off road driving?
The Terra has impressed me off road. I’ve gotten me out of some sticky situations with the 4WD system and ground clearance.
It's enough to get by, but I wish Nissan would offer more serious off road upgrades from the factory. Great locking differential option.
At this price point, the Terra does a good job off road. It's not a top of the class, but it's also not a mall crawler.
