Is the MT-09 a good first bike?
Yamaha MT-09 is famous for its powerful 890cc triple engine and naked bike aggressive styling. It’s often the go to choice for experienced riders, but there’s still discussion if it could work for beginners. On one side, some argue its multiple riding modes and modern electronics mean it’s manageable, while on the other side, some argue that its power is too much for new riders to handle safely. We need to consider rider maturities, physical sizes and previous experience of powerful vehicles. The bike’s lightweight chassis and upright ergonomics make it friendly to beginners, but its ability to wheelie, and rapid acceleration, may be too much. It’s also about cost — dropping an expensive new bike hurts more than a used starter bike.
Absolutely not. If you are a beginner, the MT 09 has way too much power. You first need to learn how to properly control the throttle and move your body on something smaller.
If you are a mature rider with good self control it can work. Just stay in the tamest riding mode and respect what the bike can do.
I began on an MT 09 and I was fine, but I’m probably the exception. It definitely needs a little extra caution and taking it slow at first.
No way. The MT-09's power delivery is twitchy enough that even experienced riders can't help but be thrown a bit. It was easy for a new rider to get in over their head.
It depends on the person. If you have dirt bike experience or good mechanical sympathy you could probably get away with it. For most people, it’s too much bike to begin with.
