Is the Maruti Tour H2's CNG option a game changer for eco friendly taxi fleets?
Maruti Tour H2 has a factory fitted CNG option that has caught the fancy of taxi fleet operators and those who are environment conscious. This feature has sparked conversations around the possibility of decreasing the carbon footprint of cities and particularly those cities that have high levels of air pollution. It covers the cost effectiveness of CNG vis a vis petrol or diesel, the availability of CNG infrastructure in different regions, and long term sustainability of CNG as an alternative fuel. Others say that CNG is a stepping stone to cleaner mobility solutions, but still others believe that investing in CNG infrastructure might delay the uptake of fully electric vehicles. The discussion also covers performance and maintenance of CNG vehicles in the hard conditions of taxi operations.
Absolutely! Petrol is way more expensive than CNG and also much cleaner. For taxi operators trying to save on costs and reduce emissions, it’s a no brainer. The CNG Tour H2 could truly clean our cities.
I'm not so sure. CNG is cleaner than petrol but it is still a fossil fuel. Instead of investing in another temporary solution, we should be pushing for full electrification. In fact, the Tour H2 CNG could even slow down EV adoption in the taxi sector.
The CNG option is a great thing as a taxi driver. I save money and I feel good about polluting less. The problem is that CNG stations are not everywhere. The only reason it’s a game changer is if the infrastructure is there to support it.
You have all forgotten about the performance issues of CNG vehicles. Less power and less acceleration are often a problem in city traffic. So is it really worth the trade off?
It's a great intermediate step, I think. It’s clear we can’t switch to all electric overnight, but we can begin to reduce emissions now with CNG. With the Tour H2 CNG, we have a practical solution while we build up EV infrastructure.
The elephant in the room is safety. In accidents, CNG tanks can be dangerous. Are we really okay with thousands of these vehicles flying around our cities?
Having worked on CNG conversions myself, I can tell you that modern factory fitted CNG systems, like those in the Tour H2, are much safer and more efficient than aftermarket conversions. For eco conscious fleet operators, it is a solid choice.
