Is the Mahindra Xylo's popularity in rural areas to the detriment of its suitability for urban driving?

With its rugged build, high ground clearance and spacious interior, the Mahindra Xylo has become a favorite with people in rural and semi urban areas of India. All of this makes it well adapted to rough roads and large families, situations that are the rule in rural areas. But that rural popularity has raised doubts about whether it can work in urban areas. Challenges of urban driving include tight traffic, crowded parking areas, and improved fuel efficiency in stop and go driving. Compare how the Xylo's size, turning radius and fuel consumption stacks up against other city oriented vehicles. Is its rural friendly design too cumbersome for city use, or does its versatility make it a good all rounder for both urban and rural driving?

I have my Xylo in the city every day and it’s a great bike. I love that the seating position is so high, it’s perfect for being able to see over traffic, and the spacious interior is a lifesaver if I’m hauling stuff for work. It's not as nimble as a hatchback, far from it, but it certainly isn't unusable.

I would never drive a Xylo in the city. It's a bit like trying to parallel park a small bus. Plus, the fuel efficiency in stop and go traffic is abysmal. It’s much better suited for urban driving.

It's all about perspective. Yes, it's big, but so's half the SUVs that are on the road right now. For a car of its size, the Xylo has decent turning radius. Also, that high ground clearance comes in handy in a city like Mumbai, where the roads overflow every monsoon.

I really think it depends on the city. The Xylo is fine in a place with wider roads and more open spaces. But what if the city was old and the lanes were narrow? Forget about it. Something smaller would be better.

If you drive between the city and rural areas as I do, then you will love the Xylo's versatility. It’s not the best at everything, but it is good enough at most things. Jack of all trades, master of none, but very good at it.
