Is the Mahindra Thar really the hype, or all it’s cracked up to be?
In India, the Mahindra Thar has become a cult car thanks to its looks and off road abilities. But others contend that it’s more of a lifestyle vehicle than a practical daily driver. One of the points of contention has been the boxy design, limited seating and compromised on road comfort. It also happens to have become a stereotype that Thar owners are aggressive drivers with a 'king of the road' mentality. However, enthusiasts contend that the Thar gives a special driving encounter, and a capacity that can't be copied by normal SUVs. The debate about the practicality versus the lifestyle statement appeal of the Thar has been one that people have strong opinions on both sides.
The Thar is honestly overhyped. It is uncomfortable to use daily, is poor on fuel efficiency, and is a pain to park in the cities. It’s cool looking, sure, but that novelty wears off real quick when you’re stuck in traffic with no AC.
If you know what you’re getting yourself into, as a Thar owner, I can assure you it’s totally worth it. It’s not intended to be a family car or a city commuter. It’s for the adventurous who don’t mind forgoing a bit of comfort for capability.
The Thar is a niche vehicle which does what it is intended to do. When you pit it against regular SUVs, you're really comparing apples to oranges. It's fantastic if you want off road capability and don't mind the compromises. If you want comfort and practicality, look elsewhere.
I believe the Thar is more than a lifestyle statement. One of the few off-roaders in India that can actually do serious terrain is actually affordable. What's more, the new generation has much better on road manners than the old one.
But the hype around the Thar is mostly justified, not everyone will like it. It's a commitment vehicle that you need to understand its limitations. If you only buy it for the looks, then you will probably be disappointed. It's amazing if you actually use it for what it's supposed to be used for.
