The KTM 690 Enduro R is a bike that’s famous for a potent single-cylinder engine, with something like 74 horsepower in a fairly light package. While this power-to-weight ratio may be appealing to experienced off-road riders, it is cause for concern to new riders to off-road riding. The bike is especially tall, and the engine could feel really powerful and intimidating or, worse still, dangerous for beginners. Since this question is about newer off-road riders wanting to learn on or older off-road riders wanting something for a different part of their riding. It also discusses the learning curve of the bike and some strategies to help new riders safely adapt to its performance.

This is definitely not a beginner-friendly bike. It’s pretty abrupt power delivery, and easy to get in over your head if you don’t watch out. I would suggest starting off with something smaller and working your way up.

I actually started on a 690, and although it was tough at the start, I feel it made me a better rider. All you have to do is respect the bike and go slow. Traction control and riding modes make a big difference too.

It depends on the rider. If you know your way around the streets and you're sensible, you can jump on a 690. If you are totally new to motorcycles, it’s probably too much bike.

I teach off-road riding and wouldn't recommend the 690 for true beginners. It’s too easy to get into trouble. Start with a 250-400cc, build your skills, and then move up.

I think folks exaggerate how 'powerful' the 690 is. It's got a bit of grunt, but it's not a race bike. It is definitely something a beginner could handle with some self-control and proper instruction.

Since I started on a much smaller bike and then moved to the 690, I'm glad I didn't start with it. The bike is manageable for the power, but the weight and height of the bike can be a killer for new off-road riders.

It is the rider’s maturity and self-awareness. If you can avoid the temptation to go balls out and concentrate on getting the technique down, the 690 really can be a great learning platform. You have power when you need it, but it's not out of control.
