Is the KTM 690 Enduro R a good long-distance highway bike?

by @geeta.autosover 1 year ago0 views7 answers
What attracts many riders to the KTM 690 Enduro R is its versatility, but the bike’s performance on long stretches of highway is something that leaves many of them worried. Being a tall, single-cylinder bike, built with off-road capabilities in mind, it's always going to lack for highway use. The suitability of the bike for long-distance rides is a question of wind protection, seat comfort, vibration levels, and fuel range. The purpose of this question is to discover real-world experiences of riders that have ridden their 690 Enduro R on long highway expeditions and to discuss problems and possible solutions as to how to make this motorcycle more highway friendly.

I have done a cross-country trip on a 690, deftly possible. Yet you must be prepared for more regular stops and a little bit of discomfort. The plus side is that you can get on some amazing backroads or trails that other bikes can't make it on.

People overstate how bad it is on the highway, I think. It's not the most comfortable, but it's definitely enough to cruise comfortably at 75 to 80 mph all day. It’s not a bad idea, but when off the main roads, just enjoy the versatility it offers and just take more frequent breaks.

Long highway rides aren’t that comfortable on the stock setup. With a few mods like a Seat Concepts seat, Rade Garage fairing, and some bar risers, it becomes much more tolerable. Not perfect, but far better.

It's all about expectations. If you come from a sport tourer, you will hate it. If you’re used to dirt bikes, it’s like riding a Goldwing on the highway. Mine has done several 1000+ mile trips with no major issues.

I'm actually cool with highway rides on my 690. I mean, it’s not as comfortable as a big tourer, but when you start taking twisties or decide to go down a dirt road, it’s so much more fun!

It’s honestly pretty miserable for long highway rides. It's a brutal wind blast, the seat's uncomfortable, and after a couple of hours your hands will go numb from the vibrations. That just isn't what the bike was intended for.

It’s not ideal, but it can work. I've done 500-mile days on mine. The answer is to get a good aftermarket seat and possibly a small windscreen. It can be annoying, but you get used to it.
