Is the Kona Electric's relatively slow DC fast charging a road trip killer?

Notably, the maximum DC fast charging speed of the Kona Electric comes in at around 75kW, slower than many newer EVs that will support 150kW or even 350kW DC fast charging. This also means charging stops on road trips will be longer, something that will be a big factor for buyers who need to use their EV for long distance travel. The slower charging is countered by some owners who say that the Kona's efficiency makes up for the difference, while others find the additional stops frustrating. But there's also debate about which one is more important: the maximum rate or the charging curve (how long the car can maintain peak charging speeds). I have been playing around with the Kona Electric for a bit and wondered for the people who are considering the go for the Kona Electric is the charging speed going to make it a deal breaker as long as you have good planning?

It is definitely slower than I would like, but it works. When I travel, I just plan my trips carefully and use the charging stops as breaks to stretch and get food. It’s not ideal, but it’s not a deal breaker either.

My biggest complaint about the Kona is slow charging. Daily driving is fine, but road trips are a pain. I’ve had to sit at chargers for over an hour just to get enough range to make it to the next stop. Here, newer EVs have a big advantage.

I honestly think we obsess with charging speeds too much. That's how efficient the Kona is that you don't need to charge as often as some other EV. Realistically, how many people are really doing those super long road trips?

It's a trade-off. The Kona is annoying with slower charging on trips but I think the price and range make up for it. I’d rather have a longer range and charge less often than a shorter range and charge more often.

That said, as someone who road trips a lot, it’s definitely a limitation. It's not as bad as some people make it sound. The Kona can still do 75 kW pretty consistently, better than some EVs that quickly throttle down. It takes good planning.
