Is the Hyundai Tucson’s futuristic design robust enough for the long run?

The current Hyundai Tucson generation has a bold, avant-garde design that puts it miles away from most of its competitors. Its unique front grille with hidden daytime running lights, sharp body lines and distinctive rear light signature mean it certainly stands out. But others say a design that bold could quickly grow old or seem dated with changing trends. And there's the question of how well these design elements will hold up physically over time, with complex lighting systems integrated into the grille. On the other hand, supporters say the Tucson's design has a premium look that is above its price point and differentiates it in a crowded segment. The question is, did Hyundai make the right choice with such a bold design direction or whether a more conservative take would have been smarter in the long run for long term appeal and resale value.

The design is awesome, I think. It’s nice to see a mainstream brand be willing to take risks. Sure it’ll look dated in a few years, but at least it’s not another boring blob on wheels.

I know it looks cool now, but I worry about how it’ll age. Do you remember how fast some of those over styled cars from the early 2000’s started to look old? I worry that the Tucson might be next.

I just find that front grille design to be too impractical. In case one of those hidden lights goes out, what happens? But it seems like it could be a expensive repair down the line.

Whether you love it or hate it, you have to admit that it’s distinctive. It's nice to see Hyundai take a chance on something different in a sea of look alike crossovers.

I reckon the overall shape will age well, but some of the more extreme details will look a bit silly in a few years. But I'd rather have something interesting than another forgettable design.

After owning both a "safe" design and a more out there design, I can tell you that driving something unique is a blast. If it ages poorly, at least you had some fun while it was fresh!
