Is the Hyundai Nexo practical for long road trips, or does hydrogen infrastructure just not exist?
As a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Hyundai Nexo faces special challenges on long distance travel. Although it has an impressive range of over 380 miles on a tank of hydrogen, the lack of hydrogen fueling stations is a big road trip killer. However, this restriction has spurred debate about the viability of hydrogen vehicles as a common option for use, especially regarding their competition with the much larger charging networks of battery electric vehicles. Proponents say that, as infrastructure improves, the Nexo's five minute refuel time could give it the edge for long drives. But critics note that the current dearth of hydrogen stations, especially outside of California, renders the planning of long trips a logistical nightmare. And reliability — some users have had bad experiences where hydrogen stations are out of service.
They're nowhere near that, the infrastructure just isn't there yet. You’d always be on the edge about where the next fuel station will be.
