Is the GT R still a tuner’s dream in 2025, or are there better platforms?
For years, the Nissan GT-R has been lauded in the tuning community for its stout engine and drivetrain that can handle massive power increases with little more than bolt on upgrades. Such is the VR38DETT engine and the car's advanced AWD system, that tuners have been able to push performance figures beyond those of much more expensive supercars. However, the platform is starting to age and with newer, highly tuneable cars entering the market, some wonder if the GT R is still the go to for those wanting to make a high performance machine. The GT-R's proven reliability under high stress and the wealth of aftermarket parts available make it an unbeatable tuning platform, supporters say. But newer turbocharged sports cars have the same, or even better, potential using more modern technology as a basis, critics suggest. The debate around tuning a GT-R versus buying a more powerful stock car, or the long term viability of heavily modified GT-Rs, often goes on for some time.
Tuning king is still the GT-R. The VR38 engine is bullet proof and insane power is no problem at all. And there's so much aftermarket support that you can build it however you want.
